File this news under ‘things we didn’t expect to hear.’ While Apple is fighting an all-out legal war against jailbreakers and the horrible deeds they perform in the name of operating system hacking, Apple chief executive Tim Cook is helping internationalist iPhone users to unlock their phones to enjoy inexpensive international coverage.

After being offered a job in Canada and accepting the position, an iPhone 3GS user was expecting to get their phone unlocked fairly easily from their carrier, in this case AT&T. But when a customer service representative from the telecoms giant turned the user away, insisting that only Apple could help them unlock their phone, things got a little out of hand.

What started as one department avoiding a customer’s requests turned into multiple AT&T service departments offloading the problem. The customer, understandably frustrated by this point, took a chance and got in touch with Apple CEO Tim Cook, explaining the problem and voicing frustration at the lengthy process that was effectively going nowhere.

Cook’s advice wasn’t to buy a new iPhone, as one might expect, but to hold tight. An assistant to the new Apple chief executive reportedly got in touch with the customer and unlocked their iPhone – an extremely surprising move considering Apple’s general avoidance of the unlocking topic. The user’s now free to choose any carrier they like while in Canada – something many iPhone users can’t do.

It’s a fairly bizarre situation, but it’s also an explainable one. With Apple on the warpath against the iPhone jailbreaking community, presenting manageable alternatives to jailbreaking the iPhone isn’t as unusual as it may seem. Apple desperately wants to control the operating system on their phones, and by offering to unlock old phones easily instead of forcing users to jailbreak them, it can keep its own software running instead of a hacked operating system.

That makes this whole event much less of an act of kindness, and much more of an example of how Apple seems genuinely concerned about the difficulty users face when trying to unlock old phones, and how that difficulty could affect their business.
